Contributing To A Better Environment

Orica New Zealand places particular emphasis on safeguarding the environment, which is critically important given the nature of some of the materials we deal with.

Dulux, for example, has a range of environmental initiatives underway to reduce its ecological impact. In 2005 the company was awarded the Environmental Choice green tick for the majority of its water-based paints, providing customers with the confidence that its products are environmentally friendly.

Orica Powder and Industrial Coatings is another example of Orica’s commitment to the environment. The company was a recent recipient of the Enviromark award by initiating a continuous improvement plan to make the company more environmentally sustainable. The company aims to reduce energy consumption, water consumption and waste generation in line with targets set in conjunction with challenge 2010.

Yates, meanwhile, endorses several initiatives to promote the environment and wildlife. The company provides peat moss to the Kiwi Encounter at Rotorua who rear kiwi chicks for release back into the wild. Product is also supplied to the Trees for Survival programme and the Motuora Restoration Society who are restoring Motuora Island to its original condition.

Selleys, too, has environmental initiatives underway. The company has signed a packaging covenant whereby the packaging content of all of its products is evaluated. The process eliminates overpackaging and ensures that as much as possible of the content is from renewable sources.

Orica Mining Services actively recycles much of its on-site waste, including cardboard and plastics. What’s more, the copper wiring leads are being resold to a metal recycler. Impressively, less than 25% of its waste now goes to landfill.

And Chemnet has embarked on a project to enhance the reduction, recycling and final treatment of waste water. Incorporated in this development are new environmental monitoring and control equipment to provide constant reporting and control of site storm water. This will make a huge contribution towards reducing the amount of waste water produced by the plant, improving the local environment and increasing the long-term sustainability of Chemnet’s operation.
